The 9th annual Breastfeeding and Feminism International Conference (BFIC), held at the Sheraton in Chapel Hill on March 20/21, 2014, attracted 100 speakers, exhibitors and participants from eight countries and 21 states to discuss this year’s theme: Forging Partnerships for a Better Tomorrow.
Following a welcome by Bethany Holloway, Director of Breastfeeding, NC DPH, Keynote Speakers included Judy Norsigian, founder and Executive Director of Our Bodies, Ourselves, Boston Women’s Collective; Dr Jacquelyne Wolf, Ohio University Medical Historian, and a special panel on partnership presented by Dr Jason Smith, with Measure Evaluation in UNC Chapel Hill’s Carolina Population Center, and Dr Bette Gebrian, Haitian Health Foundation.
The participants’ evaluations reflect the high quality of the presentations, and offer ideas and comments for the next meeting, planned for March 19/ 20, 2015 that will take review of the last decade of change and look forward, planning for progress in for the next decade’s global effort to advance sociocultural, economic, community, health and political support for breastfeeding women.
This annual conference offers CERPs and CEUs. The organizers are Paige Hall Smith, Associate Professor, UNCG, and Miriam Labbok, Professor of the Practice, UNC at Chapel Hill. The advisory committee is multidisciplinary and includes many schools and UNC campuses: Ellen Chetwynd MSN, IBCLC, doctoral student in MCH, Gillings; Virginia Guidry, Doctoral Student in Environmental Sciences, Gillings; Eric Hodges, RN, PhD, UNC School of Nursing; Anchalee Palmquist, Assistant Professor, Elon University and Rebecca Ruhlen with Breastfeeding USA.
While the conference only takes place once a year, the conversation continues year-round.
